‘Hectic’ was an understatement on the following Monday. First, Kaylee was brought into a meeting at the last minute. Twelve of her colleagues across various teams peered at the whiteboard with a sense of nervous anticipation. Rose stood up and approached the board as Alex took control of the slideshow from her seat.

“I’m sure some of you are wondering exactly what is going on at 10 am on a Monday morning. I assure you, we are not having a case of the Mondays — Not today. I’ve gathered you all here to make an announcement that will make the next six months of work in this office very critical. We have started a potential merger deal that will unfold over the next few months. The details are all still very shaky, but we have a monumental opportunity on our hands.

“Now I know we’re in a very critical time of year for the fashion industry. Our fall and winter lines are doing well. That being said, the new work is in addition to our normal workload. This means a few of you may get the opportunity for some overtime. I’m anticipating that the extra workload will come after the New Year, for the most part. Closely connected to the merger is a new business opportunity. It’s a big project for a prestigious client in LA and, if successful, will add a new level of credibility to our profile. Both Alexis and I will be heading this project. Remember, we are all a team here, so everyone please help each other out.

“The holidays are going to be hectic; they always are. Please submit your time-off requests by the end of the week. For the members in this room, I see an intensely busy new year, so relax and enjoy the time off while you can.” Rose trailed on about various aspects of the project. Hands shot up now and again to ask questions or comments. Alex spoke in her normal business tone, addressing a few individuals with tasks and reiterating the team mentality.

The rest of the week passed in a blur, and the next week followed in the same manner. Kaylee felt that all she had done was work, eat, and sleep. Rose kept pointing out that with these projects, the hardest parts were the beginning and the end. Kaylee pushed herself to the limit, working late into the evening several nights. Her designs had to be flawless, she told herself every hour or so. After almost a month of grueling work, it was Halloween night. Kaylee had requested to leave at noon so she could spend extra time with Ryan.
